Welcome to the Landowska Harpsichord Society! We are a nonprofit organization honoring the name of legendary Polish-French-American harpsichordist Wanda Landowska. Landowska was one of the most devoted pioneers in reviving the harpsichord in the early 20th century. We are following her footsteps in organizing salon-style concerts, reviving old music with period and modern instruments. Follow our concert series and become a member today!
The Angel and the Devil
Music of Marais and Forqueray
Shirley Hunt, viola da gamba & Jason J. Moy, harpsichord
Nov.3, Friday 7:30 pm at LHS Salon, 5857 N Bernard St., Chicago, IL
The opulence of the French Baroque and its flair for the exotic are captured in the virtuoso viola da gamba music of Marin Marais and Antoine Forqueray, two of the instrument’s greatest exponents, and the most bitter of musical rivals. Renowned throughout Europe for his brilliant virtuosity and eloquent playing, Marais was said to have “played like an angel,” while the far more aggressive and fiery Forqueray reportedly “played like the Devil.” Solo keyboard works from the Golden Age of the Harpsichord by François Couperin and Jacques Duphly round out this program.
